Michel Herbelin

Michel Herbelin Watches are among the most stylish and luxurious accessories in the world and they are certainly a great addition to any watch collection. Made using precise techniques and from nothing but the best materials, a Michel Herbelin watch is a statement piece designed to last a lifetime.

Why are Michel Herbelin watches so popular?

Founded in 1947, Michel Herbelin has built its reputation on consistency. The brand remains family-owned, with each watch still designed and assembled in France, while incorporating Swiss movements for accuracy and reliability.

This combined approach gives buyers access to European craftsmanship without pushing into the price tiers associated with more widely marketed luxury brands.

The design language is clean and deliberate. You are not buying into trends that fade. You are buying something that fits comfortably on the wrist, whether paired with a suit, worn casually, or kept as part of a small but meaningful collection.

Topwatch offers a range of new and pre-owned Michel Herbelin watches for sale in South Africa. Whether you’re in Cape Town, Johannesburg or any other part of the country, we’ll get you your preferred watch.

The History of Michel Herbelin Watches

This watch brand was founded by Michel Herbelin. Living and working in the French watchmaking capital of Charquemont, Herbelin’s parents originally intended for their son to take over their business, but he had watch making day dreams.

He went against the wishes of his parents and studied watchmaking. After a few years spent practicing his craft at a local watch factory, he was not happy with the fact that the watches he was making were not able to live up to his high standards. As such he was inspired to create his own brand of watches which would aim to restore the honour and the quality of French watchmaking tradition.

His first watch was manufactured in his parent’s house in Charquemont, when he was 26 years old. This first watch was christened “IMPEC”, a name he chose to tell people about his goal to create stylish watches that worked just as they should. He wanted to create IMPECcable watches.

During these early days, he worked with both Swiss and French suppliers, those based in the Charquemont area. Using his skills and their supplies, he could provide his customers with an array of stunning watches that soon gained a fantastic reputation.

Up until 1965, the brand had simply been known as IMPEC. But after the success the brand enjoyed, it underwent a name change and became Michel Herbelin. If you want to sell your Michel Herbelin watch, our team would gladly assist in the process, as we buy Michel Herbelin watches of all sorts.

Keeping it in the family

Michel Herbelin inspired generations of his family to take up watchmaking. The brand has been on the move for the past 40 years, and his two sons joined him in his passion for making watches of the highest calibre.

In the 1980’s, Michel Herbelin found itself in competition with the growing Quartz brand. Instead of going along with the general consensus that the French watchmaking world would be suffering a blow, Michel Herbelin’s sons saw it as an amazing opportunity to unleash their creativity and to be challenged to grow the brand.

And it paid off. Today, Michel Herbelin is a brand that is still in the family and it is as popular as ever.

What makes Michel Herbelin different from other luxury watch brands?

While many brands lean heavily on heritage storytelling or bold aesthetics, Herbelin focuses on balance.

  • Designed and assembled in France
  • Swiss-made movements for precision
  • A mix of quartz and automatic options
  • Elegant designs that suit both formal and everyday wear
  • A price point that sits below many traditional luxury competitors

This makes Michel Herbelin watches easier to enjoy, day after day.

Which Michel Herbelin collections should you shop?

The brand offers a range of collections, each with its own character. Newport remains one of the most recognisable, drawing on maritime influences while maintaining a classic sport feel.

Cap Camarat moves in a sharper, more modern direction, with integrated bracelets and bold lines.

Art Deco delivers refined symmetry and dress appeal for something more tradition, while 5th Avenue leans into a sleek, urban aesthetic. City and M-Band collections offer minimalist styling, making them ideal for those who prefer an understated presence on the wrist.

Are Michel Herbelin watches quartz or automatic?

Michel Herbelin produces both quartz and automatic watches, giving buyers flexibility depending on how they plan to wear their watch. Quartz models offer convenience and low maintenance, while automatic options appeal to those who appreciate mechanical craftsmanship and the subtle rhythm of a self-winding movement.

How much does a Michel Herbelin watch cost in South Africa?

Pricing varies depending on the model, movement and materials, but generally sits within a mid-to-premium range. Entry-level quartz models are more accessible, while automatic pieces and chronographs move into higher price brackets.

Pre-owned options can offer additional value, especially for buyers looking to access more premium models at a reduced cost.

Should you buy a new or pre-owned Michel Herbelin watch?

Both options have their place. New watches provide the assurance of untouched condition, while pre-owned pieces often present an opportunity to access higher-end models at a more approachable price point.

At Topwatch, each watch is selected with care, giving buyers confidence whether they are purchasing new or pre-owned.
