The IWC Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar TOP GUN IW502902 (2012–2016) is the world’s first Big Pilot to combine a perpetual calendar with a black ceramic case — a technical tour de force that remains one of the most impressive and rare modern IWC pilot watches ever made.
This imposing 48 mm × 15.5 mm matte-black Ceratanium®-style zirconium-oxide ceramic case (actually early-generation ceramic before Ceratanium was named) houses the in-house Calibre 51614 automatic movement: a 7-day (168-hour) power reserve, Pellaton winding with ceramic components, and Kurt Klaus’s legendary perpetual calendar module that automatically recognizes month lengths and leap years until 2100 — displayed across four sub-dials (day at 9, date at 12, month at 3, and moonphase + power-reserve at 6). The double moonphase correctly shows the moon in both northern and southern hemispheres.
The jet-black dial with white printing, massive luminous propeller hands, and soft-iron inner cage for anti-magnetic protection stay true to pilot-watch DNA while the signed titanium crown and textile strap reinforce the military-tool aesthetic. Limited production (only a few hundred pieces per year) and discontinued status have made the IW502902 a modern grail.
