On Wally Schirra's wrist in 1962, the first Speedmaster was launched into space. Of course, the model's relationship with NASA was not limited to that. NASA chose the Speedmaster as their official timepiece in March 1965, certifying it as "flight qualified by NASA for all manned space missions," and giving each astronaut in the programme a Speedmaster Professional. Of course, on July 20, 1969, a ref. 105.012 became the first watch to be placed on the Moon.
