Buying a pre-owned Tudor: what to check

The price depends on the specific watch, not the collection name alone. Before you commit, work through the listing and ask about anything else you need to know:

• Case and bracelet: look for dents, deep scratches, uneven edges, heavy polishing and worn bracelet links or clasp parts. A freshly polished watch is not necessarily in better condition than one with honest wear.
• Bezel, crystal and dial: check for chips, marks, moisture damage, mismatched hands or lume and any refinishing or replacement components. On a chronograph, confirm the pushers and registers operate properly.
• Movement and water resistance: ask whether timekeeping and functions have been checked. If you intend to swim or dive with the watch, request a recent pressure-test result.
• Reference and provenance: confirm that the watch, stated reference and supplied documentation agree. Ask what is known about prior ownership and whether any parts have been replaced.
• Service history: an invoice or official service card details what was done and when. If there is no record, allow for the possibility of a future service.
• Seller and terms: check the seller’s authentication process, the condition description, the warranty offered by the seller and how returns are handled.

Tudor guarantee, box and papers – what do they mean?

These terms are often grouped together, but they tell you different things:

• A Tudor guarantee card records the watch’s original retail guarantee details. For a valid claim, Tudor requires a card completed by an official retailer at purchase and presented with the watch through its authorised network.
• The original box is an accessory. This could be important to you as a collector, but a watch can be genuine without it.
• Papers can mean the original card, booklets, receipts or other items. Always ask precisely what the seller means by “full set”.
• Service records show documented work. An official Tudor Service Card following a complete authorised service is separate from the original retail guarantee card.
• Provenance is what can be established about a watch’s ownership and history. It may be more or less complete depending on its age.
• Authentication is an assessment of the watch itself, including its movement and components. Neither packaging nor paperwork replaces it.

Tudor watches sold since 2020 carry a five-year international guarantee. This is transferable within its term, subject to Tudor’s conditions. Normal wear, loss, theft and misuse are excluded, and unauthorised work or non-Tudor components can invalidate cover.

A watch bought pre-owned does not receive a new five-year period simply because it changes hands. Check the original sale date and the remaining coverage, if any. Older watches may have different paperwork and may be long out of guarantee.

 

Servicing a Tudor watch

Current Tudor watches are predominantly mechanical. An automatic Tudor winds as you wear it and does not need a routine battery change. The watch could need winding after a period off the wrist, and its movement will need maintenance over time.

Tudor recommends service through its authorised network. A complete service includes an overhaul of the movement and water-resistance testing. Tudor states that a complete authorised service carries a two-year Service Guarantee, subject to its terms. Service needs depend on the model and how the watch has been used, so a dated service record and its current performance tell you more than a fixed rule for every Tudor.

If an older watch has no documented service, ask what checks have been performed and whether the price leaves room for potential work.

 

What affects the price of a pre-owned Tudor?

Model and reference are factored, but so is age, condition, originality, bracelet fit, accessories, documented service history and current demand. A rare dial or earlier reference will appeal to collectors, while another buyer might value a newer example with remaining manufacturer cover. Compare like with like: two Black Bays with different movements or documentation are not automatically equivalent.

Market value and resale liquidity can change. Neither a respected model nor a complete set guarantees that you will recover your purchase price. Choose the watch you like, then compare its asking price with comparable examples and its actual condition.
