The IWC Big Pilot’s Watch IW500201 is widely considered the “definitive” Big Pilot for serious horological collectors. Released in 2002, this reference IW5002 was the first to bring the massive proportions and cockpit-instrument legibility of the original 1940s aviation watches to the luxury consumer market.
What makes the IW5002-01 particularly special is its “heart”—the IWC Calibre 5011. Known as a “slow-beat” movement because it operates at 18,000 vibrations per hour, it offers a distinct ticking cadence reminiscent of historical pocket watches. This movement features the patented Pellaton winding system, which efficiently builds a staggering 168-hour (7-day) power reserve, allowing the watch to maintain precision even when left off the wrist for a week.
The 46mm stainless steel case is fine-brushed with polished accents on the bezel, and the matte black dial is optimized for instant reading. The large Arabic numerals and hands are coated in high-grade luminescence, while the date window at 6 o’clock adds modern practicality. The watch is traditionally paired with a thick, riveted buffalo leather strap, completing its rugged, functional aesthetic.
