Rolex models and references

Our current Rolex collection includes the Datejust, Day-Date, Oyster Perpetual, Submariner, GMT-Master II, Cosmograph Daytona, Explorer and Explorer II, Sea-Dweller, Deepsea, Yacht-Master, Sky-Dweller, Land-Dweller and Perpetual 1908. Each has a different combination of case size, materials and functions. Availability on this page depends on the watches Topwatch has in stock.

The pre-owned catalogue also includes earlier generations and discontinued Rolex references, including models from the older Cellini line. A model family still in production may have individual references that are no longer made. Check the full reference number and the specific watch’s details before comparing it with a current-production model.

Collection What to look for
Datejust A classic everyday Rolex with a date display. Case size, metal, bezel and dial vary widely by reference, so check the exact version.
Day-Date A dressier model that shows the day and date. Compare the case metal, bracelet and dial of each listing.
Oyster Perpetual A simpler, time-only design. A good starting point if you want a clean dial without extra functions.
Submariner A dive-style watch with a rotating bezel. Check the bezel, case condition and the water-resistance history of the specific watch.
GMT-Master II Built for tracking a second time zone. Compare the bezel colours, bracelet and condition of the reference.
Cosmograph Daytona A chronograph for timing. Check the pushers, dial and service history of the exact watch.
Explorer and Explorer II Sports watches that suit everyday wear. Confirm the reference, as the two models differ in functions and appearance.
Sea-Dweller and Deepsea Larger dive watches. Consider the size on your wrist and check the specific reference.
Yacht-Master A sporty watch with a nautical character. Compare case size, metal and bezel across references.
Sky-Dweller A more complex watch with additional functions. Make sure you understand how its controls work and ask about its service history.
Land-Dweller and Perpetual 1908 Newer additions to the Rolex range. Confirm the exact reference, year and documents supplied.

What to check when buying a pre-owned Rolex

  • Reference and configuration: the reference identifies a specific version of a model. Check its case size, metal, bezel, dial and bracelet instead of comparing every Datejust or Submariner as though they were identical.
  • Condition and originality: look closely at the case, bracelet, bezel, crystal and dial. Ask about polishing and any replacement or aftermarket components. A genuine Rolex with modified parts is a different proposition from an example in its original configuration.
  • Year and service history: the stated year can place a watch in a particular generation but reflect a sale date rather than an exact manufacturing date. Ask what is known about servicing and any supporting records.
  • Box, papers and provenance: an original box with warranty card or papers and documented purchase history explain a watch’s background. Confirm exactly which documents accompany the listing.
  • Price: Compare the asking price with watches of the same reference and similar configuration and condition. The model name alone is too broad a basis for judging value.

Buying with confidence

Authentication is the inspection of the watch itself. Topwatch pre-owned watches are inspected for condition, accuracy, functionality and water resistance.

Ask what the specialists have verified for a specific Rolex: the reference and serial details where appropriate, movement and components, originality, condition and any available provenance or service documents.

Before paying, review the warranty terms and returns policy for that watch, especially if it is vintage. Topwatch has a limited warranty for pre-owned watches, subject to exclusions, and shipments are insured in transit.

Rolex prices and secondary-market value

Prices can move between purchase and resale; some watches may hold value relatively well, while others can depreciate. Past performance is no guarantee of a future resale price. Buy on the merits of the specific watch and the price you are comfortable paying for it.

Why buy a pre-owned Rolex in South Africa?

Buying from a local secondary-market specialist lets you compare older and current-generation references in rand and discuss each watch’s condition and documentation before deciding. You also gain access to discontinued models that are not in Rolex’s current collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who invented Rolex?

The company was founded by two men; Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davies. The primary founder was Wilsdorf who at the age of 24 established the company in London in 1905. Initially, the company was a distributor of timepieces but it was his dream to create a watch which could be worn on the wrist. At this time, wristwatches were not 100% reliable and they certainly were not elegant. He sought to change that and the rest, as they say, is history.

What makes the Rolex watch so expensive?

Even the most dedicated watch collector can agree that the Rolex watch is a pricey accessory. What makes it so expensive is the quality of the timepiece as well as how complicated the piece is. Most of the watch parts are made by hand, in-house which is another factor that contributes to the price of the watch.

Does a pre-owned Rolex hold its value?

Prices can move between purchase and resale. Some watches may hold value relatively well, while others can depreciate, and past performance is no guarantee of a future resale price. Buy on the merits of the specific watch and the price you are comfortable paying for it.

How can you check that a pre-owned Rolex is authentic?

Authentication is the inspection of the watch itself. Ask what the specialists have verified for a specific Rolex: the reference and serial details where appropriate, movement and components, originality, condition and any available provenance or service documents.

How should you look after your watch?

To preserve the value and look of your watch, you want to make sure that you clean it ever so often with a microfiber cloth, while you can also wash the case and the bracelet (don’t wash leather) with soapy water and a soft brush. If you are going to swim in the ocean with your watch, be sure to rinse it afterwards. Keep in mind that not all of the watches are waterproof.
